If you know, then you know about those John Deere Green boots.
The green was scuffed in places,
Not just green, they were a few sizes too big!
Often worn on the wrong feet,
They were well used, with the tread almost worn slick.
Best of all, they belonged to her big brother.
Every time I said, “Little Man get your boots on” he couldn’t find them.
Not because he misplaced them, but because she ‘borrowed’ them.
Millie loved brother’s boots.
She drove him crazy taking his boots.
When he outgrew them, she promptly claimed them for her own.
They were easy to slide into or kick off in a flash.
While all the other sisters wore princess pink boots, she was content in green.
From riding the four-wheeler, to playing in the dirt, chasing the cats, to playing on the swing, those boots served her well.
Going to church, with her little dress swinging, to pj’s at the hospital, those boots were her constant choice.
I still hear her little feet pitter pattering down the long hallway of the 10th floor as she announced, “I’m HOME to my hospital”.
To be two years old and find joy in a place of sickness. To make friends with all your caregivers, trusting them even as you know they must do things that will hurt. To trust and love despite the hardships inflicted upon her for one-third of her life. To be content with whatever was placed in front of her ((Except pull-ups but that's a story for another day...))
Oh, that we all could all live like Millie –loving others like Millie –and squeezing every moment out of life.
And then to have a child like faith that Millie had and to see Jesus at the end of our journey.
